In class, we'll bring our story up until 1963-4 and begin our next installment of Eyes on the Prize. Be sure to bring your identifications on your syllabus up to date.

For Thursday, we'll look at four short texts that respond to the events of 1963-4 depicted in the film. These include a short story (Eudora Welty's "Where is the Voice Coming From?",) a speech (Malcolm X's "What does Mississippi Have to do with Harlem?") and two songs (Bob Dylan's "Only a Pawn in their Game" and Nina Simone's "Mississippi Goddam")
In your post, choose one of these four texts and describe it as a piece of political art. What do you see as its purpose? Who was its audience? Does it make an argument? Produce an emotion? Something else? Do you think it was likely succesful. Remember that your posts should be at least 300 words.

ReplyDeleteis a song of rage, The message is saying that everybody know the situation in Mississipi but they pretend to not knowing.She was adressed the segregattion law and lynching under Jimmy Crow in the South, in which black people have miserable life in the south. They are not access to enough available ressources in school. They are treating inequaly byt whites people.

Who was its audience?
His audience was whites and upper class black from the north, because she wanted them to take action concerning the situation in Mississipi and the whole south.
Does it make an argument?
The song is her response to the murder of Medgar Evers in Mississippi; and the bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four black children. So she was talking to the government that was not considering that issue as one of their priority.
Produce an emotion?
Yeah the song produce a strong emotion, in which people are treated like dogs, without dignity and proud. As she said““First you get depressed, then you get mad. And when these kids got bombed, I just sat down and it when you hit your thumb with a hammer.”
Something else?
It is also an anger song that have provok a protest and help civil right fighter to not give up and be strong.
